America’s “whatever shall I do?” musings can get a little taxing, but all in all, Cass delivers another round of enjoyable, clean, romantic fun for readers who would love to spend just one day in America’s pampered shoes. Like the first book in the trilogy, this installment offers delightfully royal treatment for America, cat-fighting and tension between the remaining girls, a bit of dramatic action when rebels invade the palace, and, of course, tantalizing clandestine moments with both Maxon and Aspen. Though Prince Maxon has made his feelings for America known, she wavers between wanting to be his future bride and following her ever-present feelings for her first love, Aspen, a guard from her hometown who has been assigned to protect her at the palace. Now whittled down to six girls, the Elite, the competition has grown even more cutthroat. MaIn this sequel to The Selection, America Singer continues her deliciously entertaining quest for the affection of Prince Maxon and the title of Princess of Illéa in her country’s time-honored tradition. Still, her problem with decision-making doesn't just apply to the two men. I understand that the choice is more that just two boys: If she chooses one, she will become a Six, only two steps above poverty, and if she chooses the other, she will become a One, and later the queen of the country.
America still isn't able to decide whether she wants to be with the ex-boyfriend that broke up with her, or the prince that wants to give her everything. Just like the second books in many series, I did not enjoy this book as much as the others. This is one of the most touching scenes in the book, as it shows how much the Maxon truly loves America. He stands up against the king, protecting America whist proclaiming his love for her. Instead of condemning the criminal, she pays for his debts, releasing him from jail.Īfter the Convicting, the King tries forcing Maxon to eliminate America from the Selection. The king wanted to make America seem unfaithful and merciless to the people by doing this. The king gives a criminal to America who is to be sentenced for life, because he tried stealing clothes for his children.
The Convicting is an event in which the Elites must condemn criminals to jail. This not only redeemed Celeste, but America as well, as she no longer had any enemies ( except the king) in court. Celeste apologizes for all the times she has been horrible to America, and gains America's forgiveness. She then proceeds to tell America her secrets, of how she is afraid that her career as a model will end when she gets older. In the early stages of the book, America finds Celeste crying.
